About the Event

Christine Muscat is one of the premier historical guides in Malta. She is also the author of the book “Magdalene Nuns and Penitent Prostitutes” first published in 2013 and this is the title of her talk on International Women’s Day 2022.

Christine will give us an insight into the life and times of the Magdalene nuns of the 16th - 18th centuries and of the prostitutes they took under their wing. They were an order who offered a religious life to penitents. Christine will also offer a window on an era, considering fashion, social mores and personalities of the time.

The Magdalene nuns’ Church of St. Mary Magdalene lies to this day at the foot of Merchant Street in Valletta and many of the nuns are said to have been buried under the floor of that church. With grateful thanks to the curator, Father Michael, we will be holding our talk in this very chapel.

Intrigued? If you want to know more, come along to the talk (which is free of charge) and bring a guest or two if you wish.
